A graphic picture of the adolescent American girl, brave and loyal, innocently daring, trustful alike of her vagrant impulses and of people, warm hearted and impulsive. She is quite right when she complains that her family does not understand her. Most parents do not understand their daughters of that age. Therefore this is a book that mothers and fathers of girls ought to read, for it will help to enlighten them. Also, they, and all others, will find it the most clever and amusing of all Mrs. Rinehart's books." -New York Times

I read about Bab: a Sub-Deb in another book (Elin Berlin's The Best of Families) and was curious about it. I was so happy to find it here on Amazon for Kindle, and free, no less. This is a unique book, written in 1917, a fictional autobiography of a 17-year-old girl. The spelling and grammar mistakes are deliberate, put there by the author, to make this diary seem authentic, as though it truly were written by a young lady who was more interested in getting her story down on paper than bothering with writing rules. That is what makes the book charming. I am amazed at how much less worldly and sophisticated 17-year-old girls were back in 1917. By today's standards, this fictional autobiography sounds like it was written by an 11-year-old, which is what I thought until I read further and the character claimed to be 17. Wow.Product details

Bab A SubDeb Mary Roberts Rinehart 9781542632218 Books Reviews
Read this when I was a teen. -- just as amusing as I remembered. Clean and wholesome. The setting is upper crust society in the 1920's. The main character is a 17-year-old girl who is not quite old enough to be a full-fledged debutante like her sister who is only 20 months older.
This book probably wouldn't even appeal to today's teenagers. Maybe a teen from the 40s or 50s. It is a series of shorter stories about a precocious teen girl getting involved in minor mysteries. Doesn't really interest the true mystery buff.
A friend who thought this book funny suggested it to me. While it is very, very funny and written in the intentionally awful grammar and spelling of the young girl at the center of the story, I found the writing (from the early 1900's) clever but it just wasn't my taste.
I agree with other reviewers in that this book is hilarious. I think it is wonderfully well written, especially given Bab's quirky spelling. I like how the separate incidents all tie together. Bab's story, while taking place in the early 1900's, really captures a part of every woman's adolescence. Who hasn't wanted to do more, be more or know more at one point in her life? I also loved the father in the book, who reminds her that he is still there when she needs him, but lets her find her own way as much as possible. I was so delighted to find this book.
Part of this book were very entertaining but after a long break from it I decided not to continue. There is a little bit of language in the later part of the books, Bab was fun at some points annoying at others. the spelling errors got to me in this book. It is supposed to be that way, as you are reading Bab's diary.
I laughed out loud through all the chapters. Very contemporary despite having been written long ago. Anybody who is rearing a teenage girl will recognize this and enjoy it. Anybody who has ever been a teenage girl will remember how it felt. This was great fun!
Since buying my 2, I have read many books I might never have read. Many years ago, I had discovered this author, but couldn't find very many books written by her, and had, more or less, forgotten her.
My husband is also an avid reader, so I limit my reading to books he is not likely to want to read, as I cannot think of giving up my long enough for him to read our favorite authors, whose books we most often buy from .
I loved this book! Reading about Bab reminds me of the "sub-deb" years of my own life, with the intense passing fancies, emotional roller-coasters, longings for true romance, moonlight and roses, and feelings of being totally misunderstood...particularly by my family. Bab, however, is somewhat more daring than I ever was...creating for herself the hilarious situations she finds herself in.
I, too, recommend this book for moms of teenage girls. We need to re-visit those years our daughters are now living, so that we don't just look at them from older, eyes and give them more reason to feel isolated and alone. Remembering might also save us some heartache and worry as we recall our own passage through those tempestuous years, and hope that they shall emerge from them intact and wiser.
